When was the last time you changed your homes air filters?

This is one home maintenance chore that is not always top of mind or renters or home owners. While changing your air filters is an easy task, it is easy to overlook.

Depending on how many people/pets live in a home and the homes size, it changes how often your filters need to be changed. If you have not been changing your filters regularly, here is a general guide on how often to change them:

  • Single occupant/vacation home: 6 months.
  • Single family home with no pets: 3 months
  • Single family home with 1 pet: 2 months
  • Single family home with more than 1 pet OR family members with allergies: 20-45 days

*NOTE* it is also a good idea to check them even more regularly, in case build up begins sooner!

When it comes to changing your filters, the first thing you think of is improving air quality in the home. While this is the biggest reason why, another reason to regurally change filters is it can also extend the lifetime of your air/HVAC unit. When dirty air is circulating, it creates buildup within the system, and it takes more power to get the job done.
