Storm Safety Guidelines

Being outside during a treacherous storm can be extremely dangerous if you do not take the right precautions. The type of environment you are in during the time of the storm influences what precautions you must take.

If you are in an open area, it is important to find low ground. Finding lower ground has potential to protect you in a thunderstorm because lightning usually strikes on higher ground.

If you are on any body of water, you must seek land immediately. Being on open water during a storm is one of the most dangerous places you could be because lightning strikes water at a higher rate.

If you are in a forested area, it is important to seek shelter under a growth of small trees in the lowest area you can find.

If you happen to be stuck in your car during a storm, you must keep your windows closed. You also should stay in the car to provide shelter.
